Delivering piped oxygen to the children's wards
The existing oxygen supply
Just one of the three Children's Wards in Mbarara Hospital in Uganda had oxygen, and this consisted of just one cylinder. When it ran out, there was no reserve until another delivery came, often days later
And it was piped to very crude delivery systems.
So Unni built a centralised supply
By purchasing 5 large oxygen cylinders, and buying some tubing locally, he led a working party of doctors, nurses and students to deliver reliable piped oxygen to three wards, and his new neonatal unit.
And all of this for £3,500, compared to a commercial quote for £44,000.
